Navnirman Samaj Vikas Kendra is a community-based organization and comes from a programme started with Inter Aide and was created in 1996 in Malad (W), North Mumbai, in the small district of Malwani.

In 2001, NSVK became a founding member of Uplift India Association and developed more intensively its micro finance activities initiated in 1998.

Today, Navnirman is working on 3 different programs: Family Development, Tuberculosis and Income Generation (i.e. micro-credit + micro-savings). Navnirman’s micro finance program is spread out in four branches in the slum areas of Northern Mumbai: New Collector Compound and Akashwani - both in Malwani, Malad (W) -, Charkop – in Kandivili (W) -, and Appapada – in Malad (E).

Objective/mission :

Our mission as a social, community based organisation is as follows:

“We are here to collaborate with poor people to help them in upgrading their socio economic status.”

Action’ principles :

This mission in our "Uplift Wealth" IGP programme is split-up into three specific goals:

1.       50% of families below poverty level avail financial services;

2.       70% of these families increase their income by 40%;

3.      Organization becomes operationally self-sufficient

Programs / activities :

Navnirman Samaj Vikas Kendra is running different programmes in Mumbai:

This new programme, started at the end of the financial year 2005-06, is developed along 3 axes:

1.       To work with 1800 Trans Genders in Malwani, Malad (W), on STIs prevention (Sexual Transmitted Infections);

2.       To built capacities of TG community and to help them in identifying and solving their own problems;

3.       To help them to built their own organization in order to take over this project in three years.

Target groups and beneficiaries :

Ongoing loans as of 28/02/08 is 2367.

Navnirman is working with slum dwellers of urban economically depressed areas of Malwani, Charkop and Appapada. The approach to our "partners" (microentrepreneurs)  is dissociated from religious, political, sexual and/or caste considerations.

Our "partners" are people whose entrepreneurship is frozen by a lack of financial means. They are excluded from the formal bank sector and our loans and savings products give them the capital necessary to start off a professional activity.
