Fawrou Remobe : food security in Senegal

In the northeast of the country, at the forefront of climate change and the advancing desert, the lack of access to quality seeds and aggravated droughts lead to a drop in crop productivity. In addition, all small farmers produce the same thing at the same time and have no storage facilities. This overproduction, with no possibility of storage, leads to colossal losses and to sales at knock-down prices. This situation aggravates the food insecurity of small producers and their families by preventing them from improving their income.
Solutions for the conservation of agricultural products to improve food security in the Sahel
Entrepreneurs du Monde therefore initiated a project in 2018 to provide small farmers with effective conservation and financing solutions. These solutions allow farmers to store part of their production and resell it at the most favorable time, at a price 2 or 3 times better.
Methodology of Fawrou Remobe
Granaries, loans, training and logistics
The team builds simple, innovative and efficient earthen granaries to keep crops in the dark and at a cool temperature (26°), day and night. The small producers benefit from training in soil improvement, agro-ecology and good management of their activities. The team monitors market prices to enable producers to obtain the best sales opportunities and provides grouped transportation of agricultural products. The small producers have access to microcredits to finance the agricultural campaigns and the storage of the harvested products.
Support by Entrepreneurs du Monde
The project is led by an Entrepreneurs du Monde team of Senegalese and French professionals and is supported by financial (Monegasque Cooperation, Ademe, URBIS Foundation, DB’Human, etc.) and technical (CRAterre and Schneider Electric) partners. In order to deploy and make this project viable, the team will create a social enterprise for storage and marketing and will thus contribute to strengthening this agricultural sector.
