Myanmar
Myanmar is facing a prolonged economic and political crisis, with vulnerable populations particularly affected by food insecurity and poverty.
A population facing multiple challenges
Myanmar, located in Southeast Asia, is bordered by Thailand, China, India, Bangladesh, and Laos.
Since the coup in 2021, the country has experienced persistent political and economic instability. Restrictions on movement, gatherings, and financial transactions complicate economic activity and humanitarian action. Unemployment and inflation are having a severe impact on households, while access to drinking water and essential services remains limited.
Nearly 25% of the population is affected by food insecurity, and approximately 18 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.
Major economic and social challenges
With an estimated population of 51.5 million, Myanmar ranks 144th out of 193 countries on the Human Development Index, and 50% of the population lives below the poverty line.
