Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso, a country in West Africa, faces significant human and climate challenges, with more than 2 million internally displaced persons.
A West African country facing many challenges
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country located between Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Mali. Its political capital, Ouagadougou, is located in the center of the country, while its economic capital, Bobo-Dioulasso, is located in the southwest.
Burkina Faso has a large diaspora, while within the country, more than 2 million people are internally displaced. These displacements add to the country’s high vulnerability to the effects of climate change. Finally, the withdrawal of several sources of public funding has weakened many international solidarity programs.
A country marked by stark inequalities
With an estimated population of 23 million and a human development index ranking of 185th out of 193, the country remains marked by significant inequalities. Forty percent of the population lives below the poverty line, and the majority depend on agriculture and the informal economy for their livelihood.
