Souka Kodjo – Cleaning staff Togo
My name is Souka Kodjo. I am 32 years old, married, and the father of a 3-year-old child. I am originally from Éfakopé, in the municipality of Agou, and I now live in Kara, where I run a business that pre-collects and collects household waste. I come from a family of farmers, and I am the youngest of eight siblings. My father’s death marked a turning point in my life. I had to leave my village very early to continue my studies in the city and learn to make a life for myself despite the difficulties. Later, I decided to start my own business to generate income while helping to improve my environment.
Starting a Business to Make My City Cleaner.
In 2022, I launched a pre-collection service for household waste in several neighborhoods of Kara. I started out on my own with an old tricycle I bought with my own money. My goal was to create a sustainable business for my family while helping to improve the quality of life for local residents.Today, my company operates five days a week, and I employ five staff members. I have also signed an agreement with the municipality of Kozah 1 to provide this service in several neighborhoods of the city.
Support for growing my business
The GEDEC project has played an important role in the growth of my business. Thanks to the management training and regular follow-up from my coach, I’ve been able to improve how I organize my operations and strengthen my skills. I’ve also received support in developing waste sorting and recycling initiatives. The training I received—particularly on accounting tools—now helps me better manage my income and expenses. Thanks to this support, my monthly income has increased from about 210,000 FCFA (≈ 320 €) to 330,000 FCFA (≈ 500 €). My business now allows me to provide for my family’s needs while creating jobs in my community. I am proud to contribute to the cleanliness of my city, and I aim to develop new services related to recycling and the maintenance of public spaces.
