Liberia
Despite relative political stability, Liberia continues to face high levels of poverty and food insecurity, which severely affect populations in protected areas.
A population severely affected by poverty and food insecurity
Liberia is a country in West Africa, bordered by Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire, with a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean.
Poverty affects nearly 70% of the population, and about half suffer from food insecurity. The level of financial inclusion among the population is also very low: half of the population over the age of 15 has no account with a financial institution or mobile phone provider.
Agriculture accounts for one-third of GDP and employs two-thirds of the population, 80% of whom are women. The country is also home to 40% of West Africa’s forests, making their preservation a major regional issue.
