Bringing solar energy to rural communities in the Philippines

In rural areas of the Philippines, nearly 6 million households live in energy poverty. Limited access to electricity makes daily life difficult: reduced working conditions, compromised safety, and reliance on dangerous and polluting energy sources.

While the electrification rate is 98% in cities, it is only 41% in remote areas. To provide light or power for work, many people use candles, kerosene lamps, car batteries, or generators. Some connect illegally to a neighbor’s meter. These solutions are costly, insufficient, and dangerous.

To help these isolated families, ATECO provides solar equipment adapted to rural needs:

  • Lighting for working and studying in the evening,
  • Fans and refrigerators to preserve food and medicine,
  • TVs and radios to access information.

The main obstacle for the poorest families is the lack of initial capital. ATECo therefore offers payment plans of up to 18 months, allowing beneficiaries to become owners of their equipment at the end of the plan. In its areas of operation, ATECo is the only solar operator to offer this flexibility.

The team selects equipment that is suited to rural conditions in the Philippines (sturdiness, durability, ease of use). It installs the equipment in each household, trains beneficiaries in its use, and provides maintenance for one year.

Social inequalities and limited access to basic services

The Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands, is prone to typhoons and other extreme weather events. The country also experiences internal political tensions and territorial disputes, which exacerbate social inequalities.

Despite sustained economic growth (6% in 2024) and public investment in infrastructure, a large part of the rural population does not have access to essential services. Nearly 41% of rural households do not have electricity, which limits economic activity and living conditions.

With a population of 114 million and a human development index ranked 113th out of 193, inequalities in access to energy and services remain a major obstacle to local development.

A tangible impact for rural communities

In 2024, ATECo formed partnerships to serve a greater number of families and diversified its technical offering to meet the domestic and productive needs of beneficiaries.
