Elili
In Liberia, Elili supports farmers living near protected forests. The team trains them in agroecology to improve their yields while preserving forest ecosystems.
Strengthening food security and protecting the environment
In Liberia, the agricultural sector employs two-thirds of the population, and 80% of farmers are women. They are held back by limited access to land, inputs, advice, training, and markets. Extreme weather events also have a devastating impact on crops.
In addition, 90% of the population depends on wood and charcoal for their energy needs. The rudimentary stoves that use this energy cause dangerous inhalation and contribute to deforestation.
Since 2024, Elili has been serving farmers living in Lofa County, near the Wolongozi-Wonegizi forest ecosystem conservation areas, as well as in Bong County. Elili helps producers increase their agricultural yields by using agroecological practices so that they can make a better living from their work, improve food security for all, and no longer need to resort to deforestation to expand their agricultural land.
Elili provides farmers with comprehensive support, including:
- a free savings account
- individual loans tailored to the harvest cycle
- training every four weeks (economic, technical, health, social, or environmental)
- agricultural advice and support on their land
- access to seeds and clean cooking stoves from local suppliers who are Elili partners.
A population severely affected by poverty and food insecurity
Despite a stable political and social environment, Liberia remains one of the poorest countries in the world: 70% of its population lives below the national poverty line and 50% suffers from food insecurity. The high cost of living weighs heavily on household budgets.
The level of financial inclusion among the population is very low: half of the population over the age of 15 does not have an account with a financial institution. The microfinance sector is underdeveloped and the microfinance institutions that are active serve very few farmers, even though the agricultural sector employs two-thirds of the population.
Finally, this country is home to 40% of West Africa’s forests. Preserving these forests is therefore a challenge for the entire sub-region.
Comprehensive and sustainable support, enthusiastically received by local communities
The launch of Elili has generated a lot of enthusiasm, confirming that the program meets a real need. Assessments have been carried out within communities to diversify services using an integrated approach. As a result, the team now offers access to clean cooking stoves and has launched a pilot project to grant loans in kind (seeds).

Testimonial
Thanks to her livestock farming, Gayflor Gboluwo can send her children to school.
I grow rice to feed my family, as well as oil palms and cocoa. More than 50% of our crops are for our own consumption. I also raise pigs to earn additional income. I joined Elili to secure and develop my business. With my first loan, I bought improved breeds of pigs to reduce my losses. By working hard and with Elili's support, I can pay for my children's education and help my family.
