Supporting vulnerable populations toward self-sufficiency

For the poorest Burkinabè, entrepreneurship is a vital necessity. However, most do not have access to traditional microfinance services. For them, receiving support is a key lever for developing and sustaining an income-generating activity. This support is all the more important given the very fragile socio-political context in Burkina Faso. The military junta remains in power and the country is experiencing conflict and a high risk of terrorism. There are more than 2 million internally displaced persons.

To serve these entrepreneurs living in extreme poverty, Entrepreneurs du Monde has created Yikri, a social microfinance institution. With tailored services (training, advice, savings, microcredit, social support, micro-health insurance), the Yikri team supports these micro-entrepreneurs on their path to success and sustainable improvement in their living conditions.

By ensuring a presence in rural areas and adapting its services to farmers, YIKRI is committed to food security.

Group methodology

Our social microfinance methodology gives these entrepreneurs access to a free savings account, unsecured loans, and economic, technical, and social training. Entrepreneurs also participate in meetings on health, gender, and family life, with the support of a social worker or agricultural advisor if necessary.

The Yikri team also works in partnership with ATIA, with whom it created Tond Laafi in 2018, a mutual health insurance scheme dedicated to its beneficiaries. Tond Laafi covers part of their healthcare costs, provides preventive care, and supports them in their healthcare journey.

Recognized social impact

In light of the difficult circumstances, an action plan was adopted by Yikri's Board of Directors in 2024 with the aim of reaching more vulnerable populations.

  • 30 659 beneficiaries

  • 81 % are women

  • +140 % increase in net income

I didn't have the chance to go to school. When I was 7, my father entrusted me to a friend who was a mechanic. After several odd jobs, I started a spare parts business. The first loan granted by Yikri was a springboard for my business. Over the years, I expanded my inventory and began offering more complex parts. Thanks to training, I learned how to set my prices, maximize my profits, and better manage my business. I now help my family and pay for my sister's education. My next goal is to get into freight transport.
