Mamadama Sylla – Shopkeeper in Guinea

My name is Mamadama Sylla, and I grew up working in agriculture and small business alongside my parents. For a long time, my brother supported me financially. But when he died in 2020, I found myself without a safety net and let our small business die.

Resume and develop my business

In 2023, I pulled myself together and joined Wakili, where I was able to restart my business with an initial loan of 500,000 GNF (€56). I started modestly with a bag of tenis, a tuber that is popular in Guinea, then expanded my business to include bags of rice and sugar. Today, I sell 2 tons of rice per month and 5 bags of sugar every two weeks.

Save and build a stable future

Thanks to Wakili’s training, I have learned to manage my money better and save. Every week, I put 100,000 GNF (€12) aside in my savings account, as a safety net in case of family problems or illness.

My business now allows me to help my customers with small loans and improve my daily life. My next goal is to rebuild the roof of my house and open my own shop. Before, I had no income. Today, I have gained my independence and can finally look to the future
