Training the next generation of farmers in Togo

In Togo, farmers are on the front line of climate change. Soils are becoming depleted, seasons are becoming unpredictable, and harvests are declining. Many young people, discouraged by the hard work and lack of resources, are leaving their villages for the capital… where they struggle to find better opportunities.

Yet they are the ones who feed the country. Enabling them to adapt to the climate is essential to ensuring food security for all.

Since 2023, Entrepreneurs du Monde has been running an agricultural training center in Tchébébé, in the center of the country. Its mission is to build the capacity of vulnerable young farmers and help them adopt more resilient practices. The team trains them in agroecological techniques and climate-smart solutions, while supporting them across the entire agricultural value chain.

An original model adapted to the local context

Ekofoda combines two complementary approaches:

  • modular training courses delivered at the Agroecology Resource Center;
  • individualized support provided directly on producers’ farms.

The courses last from two to four months depending on the subject matter, and a comprehensive nine-month “Agroecology Technician” course was launched in 2024. The theoretical training uses tools adapted to people with little or no schooling, while the practical training takes place on Ekofoda’s plots of land, which serve as real-life testing grounds.

Ekofoda is a member of the Professional Association of Agricultural and Rural Training Centers of Togo (APCFAR) and the National Network of Agroecology Stakeholders (RéNAAT), and collaborates with numerous technical and financial partners committed to agroecological transition.
